What is child detention?

Whether locked up in prisons, immigration facilities, care institutions, drug treatment centres or mental health facilities, children in detention are incredibly vulnerable.

Separation from their families can be traumatic enough, but they are also at serious risk of violence, neglect, denial of their civil and political rights and often face stigma and isolation when they are released.

The UN Study focuses on the detention of children in six settings. Learn more about some of the settings in which children are detained and explore our resources.
